The
equine world has always been plagued by soft tissue (muscles,
hoof, ligaments, cartilage, and vertebral) damage. In the past,
most of these injuries cost owner’s significant stress and
financial resources as well as the destruction of many valuable
animals. The key signature of most soft tissue problems is
inflammation. Inflammation is always signified by heat. While
used for many years on humans, thermography is now more widely
relied on by veterinarians and farriers.
OTI understand the issues around the “horse dentist law” in
Oklahoma. Rest assured, our service provides critical data for
animal owners, vet’s and trainers to do what they do best. With
our equipment and no-touch process, we capture and transfer “A
Higher Standard” of data leaving the final analysis and
prescribed course of action to the veterinary professionals.
Dr. Tracy Turner - 2009 Sound Horse Conference
According to Dr. Tracy Turner DVM, MS Diplomate, in his recent
field research involving 50 horses covering two racing seasons,
his team conducted 686 thermographic examinations and Dr. Turner
presented their findings at the 2009 Sound Horse Conference in
Gainesville, FL. He concluded that by using thermographic
imaging “Problem areas were identified 2.3 weeks prior to
trainer concern” with a 95% agreement from the veterinarian’s
corresponding examination. In Dr. Turner’s assessment, this 95%
veterinarian agreement is the “gold standard of proof” in
validating the use of thermography.

COMPELLING USES FOR EQUINE THERMOGRAPHY
The reason to adopt thermography in the assessment of your
investments is compelling –
“A Higher Standard” of care is what
your animal deserves! You no longer have to settle for less!
A Screening Tool
- to non-invasively assess inflammation. Heat
is transferred by circulation, blood flow, and local metabolism. Thermography can find areas of increased heat caused by
increased circulation. The same is true for the opposite – cold
spots caused by a lack of circulation can also be found. This
indicates a lack of circulation.
Early Detection Analysis
- Quickly identify a suspected injury
without waiting a couple of weeks for it to show up. This will
dramatically reduce the horses down time and make the both of
you much happier!
Historical Records Documentation - Having your horse(s)
scanned and documented on a quarterly basis allows you to keep
critically important information about the progress of
rehabilitation and/or a solid record of health.
Training / Treatment Follow-up - track the progress of
short-term treatments ensuring that the horse is not being
overworked and is making the progress you expect.
Pre-Purchase Thermographic Analysis
- When you buy a used
pickup you usually pop the hood, look under it, kick the tires,
then take it for a test drive. When you buy a horse, you usually
perform a visual inspection, check his/her temperature, check
the feet, then take it for a test ride. Until recently, in
either case you didn’t have the ability to look inside the
engine. Well, I can’t help you with the pickup, but OTI’s
technology can help you look deep inside the engine of your
potential equine investment! That’s a huge value!
Pre-Sale Thermographic Analysis - Want to increase the market
value of your prized animal before the sale? Present the
prospective buyer with a thermal full body scan reviewed by a
third-party vet knowledgeable in thermography. It’ll be well
worth the small investment!
Hoof Balance - Sore feet = a lot of heat. Thermography can
detect it.
Saddle Fit / Imbalanced Rider - This could result in leg and
back problems in your horse.
ADDITIONAL SERVICES OFFERED
Animal owners can track their animals day or night (even in
pitch dark). If you have a large property with animals roaming,
a thermal infrared camera will allow you to pinpoint and recover
strays from considerable distance. In addition, unwelcome quests
and predators can be spotted and dealt with before they cause
your animal damage.
Oklahoma Thermal Imaging, Inc can also assist with animal
recovery in the Oklahoma City area.
